Learning by Doing with Reflection

[

]

Dr. JaeHwan Byun is an assistant professor of the Master of Education in Learning and Instructional Design (MEd LID) program in the School of Education of College of Applied Studies at Wichita State University (WSU). He obtained his doctoral degree in Education specialized in Instructional Design and Technology from Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) in 2012. After three years of a post-doctoral researcher period in V-Lab (Virtual Environment Lab) at SIUC, he started teaching online graduate courses related to learning and instructional theories and undergraduate courses about how to use technologies in elementary school classrooms at WSU in August 2015. Recently, he has developed a Graduate Certificate in Educational Technology program and has been teaching several graduate-level online courses of the certificate program, too.

His career goal is to seek ways to create a learning environment where learners can learn through aesthetic learning experiences, which are engaging, infused with meaning, and felt as coherent and complete. In the journey to pursue the goal, he has studied digital game-based learning during the period of time at SIUC. He noticed the potential of digital games on learner engagement in virtual learning environments and investigated the factors of digital games that can possibly engage learners in a virtual learning environment.

The research topic he is interested in currently is the interactions in online learning environments (e.g., between student-student, teacher-student, and content-student), under the assumption that interaction could be another key to engage students in a learning environment. Also, he is looking for ways to measure the level of students' engagement in more objective methods, such as electroencephalogram (EEG) and Learning Analytics method.
